Being locked into a massive platform like Alibaba or Amazon has advantages (economies of scale for SEO and fulfillment) and disadvantages (a higher percentage of sales being taken as a fee, vulnerability to regulation.) The smart thing to do is to open your store on multiple platforms, for instance, Amazon and Shopify, and use a 3rd party management application to cross-manage inventory between them (meaning, when someone buys an item from your Shopify store, it’s automatically taken off your Amazon store, and vice versa.) Get ahead of the curve by thinking about independent e-commerce solutions now. What would such a solution do? How would it look?
